Lanai Golf The island of Lanai once had more pineapples than people, more hunters than tourists, and more four-wheel drive vehicles than cars. For most of this century, the island's fertile plains served as a giant plantation for Dole pineapples, while its mountainous interior abounded with hunters in search of wild turkey, pheasant, and axis deer. That was the old Lanai. Today, the island has a new cash crop: Golf courses. During the last decade, Dole Food Co. Inc., which owns almost the entire island, has unveiled two stunning resorts courses. The first, the Jack-Nicklaus-designed Challenge at Manele, is situated on Lanai's sun-kissed eastern coast and is carved from a dry, desert-like terrain overlooking the crescent-shaped Hulapoe Bay and the elegant Manele Bay Hotel. The Challenge at Manele is the environmental opposite of its upland counterpart, the Greg Norman-designed Experience at Koele, set in the island's cool, lush highlands and accompanied by the handsome Lodge at Koele. The two courses reflect the different moods of this small island, and golfers can stay at either resort and enjoy both courses.
