Maui Golf An island saying, Maui no ka oi -- Maui is the best -- certainly holds true when it comes to golf. Lying at the heart of the island chain, Maui courses offer something no other island can match -- stunning cross-channel vistas of the neighboring islands of Molokai, Lanai and Kahoolawe. Maui has two distinct sides: East Maui, dominated by a 10,000-foot dormant volcano known as Haleakala, is by far the larger of the two. Two high-profile resorts, Wailea and Makena, sit side by side on Haleakala's dry, sun-drenched southern slope. The Wailea resort features three championship layouts -- the Blue, Gold, and Emerald -- while Makena has its North and South courses. Mountain, ocean, and off-shore island backdrops frame almost every shot at these five layouts, four of which (all but the Wailea Blue) are designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.
Maui's two other distinguished resorts, Kaanapali and Kapalua, are located on the west side of the island. Kaanapali has two 18-hole layouts, with the Kaanapali North Course leading the way. A 1962 Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design, Kaanapali North features large contoured greens and superlative ocean vistas and each October serves as the site of the Senior PGA Tour's Kaanapali Classic. Nearby Kapalua boasts three championship courses; The Bay, The Village, and The Plantation. At every turn, they will test your skills and stimulate your senses: Look one way and pineapple fields disappear into the West Maui Mountains; look the other and the rugged windward cliffs of Molokai rise abruptly from the sea. Small wonder that Kapalua's Plantation Course, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, is home to the season-opening PGA Tour event, the Mercedes Championships.
