The Hawaiian Islands
Born of fire,
the 50th state consists of about 125 islands and islets -
each of which is actually a summit in a vast volcanic
mountain range that burst from the floor of the middle
Pacific Ocean. Only eight of these islands are large enough
to be habitable, and the great majority of citizens live in
or near the capital city of Honolulu, on the island of
Oahu.
Highs in the mid-80s and lows in the mid-60s make for an
ideal climate, while prevailing trade winds consistently
blow against the northeast slopes. Windward sides of the
islands are wet while the leeward are dry. Each of the main
islands is a delight for visitors, with world-class resorts,
beautiful golf courses, great beaches, and lots of
opportunities to explore by car or bus, by helicopter, by
cruise ships, by sail...even by submarine.
