Hawaii-The Big Island - Kohala
Coast
At first site,
this vast region of leeward Hawaii looks like nothing but a
rippling sea of stiff black lava. But look again. Green
oases of irrigated golf
courses surround
glamorous resorts that continue to spring up like modern
miracles. The Waikoloa Beach Resort, for example, built
itself around one of the coast's best recreational areas,
coconut-rimmed Anaehoomalu Bay. The Hilton
Waikoloa Village
is a 62-acre fantasy resort boasting monorail trains, canal
boats, a rich art collection, and an artificial sea with
trained dolphins. Near Hapuna Beach, which is one of the
best on the island, you can visit Puukohola Heiau, a
beautifully preserved stone temple where the war chief
Kamehameha killed his main rival before setting out to
conquer the islands.
