Hawaii-The Big Island - Kona
Coast
The Kona Coast,
along the leeward side of the enormous mountain called Mauna
Loa, has its own weather pattern - misty afternoons on the
uphill slopes. This is the right weather for coffee country
and the famous Kona bean is much in evidence here, from
informal cafes and tasting rooms to old farms and mills. The
Kona Historical Society offers tours of a working coffee
farm from the old days. Nearby is the Puuhonua ("place of
refuge") at Honaunau, a walled temple complex that is
certainly the most magnificent remnant of old Hawaii.
The area's big town is
Kailua-Kona, home of the annual Ironman Triathlon as well as
some of the most significant sites in Hawaiian history - not
to mention shopping at the Kona Inn Shopping Village and
dining at Waterfront.
