Kauai - Coconut Coast
Many Kauai
visitors stay on the island's east shore in small hotels and
condos that stretch from the town of Kapaa in the north down
through the district of Wailua, an area otherwise known as
the "Coconut Coast." Kapaa maintains the look of a
late-19th-century plantation village, with wooden boardwalks
and old false-front buildings that house boutiques and
eateries. The little town of Waipouli is known for its
Coconut Marketplace with 70 shops selling everything from
scrimshaw to rubber slippers. To the south, the Wailua River
has its Fern Grotto, visited by excursion boats that
serenade passengers. Wailua Valley was populous in ancient
times (as it is today), and it contains many ancient
Hawaiian sites, as well as two beautiful cascades - Wailua
Falls and Opaekaa Falls.
