Oahu - Waikiki
Honolulu's resort grew up along Waikiki Beach, which, because of its protective reef far offshore, is one of the safest beaches in the state. Its strip of tall hotels includes two classic beauties - the coral-pink
Royal Hawaiian Hotel (with its huge shopping center) and the elegant Sheraton Moana Surfrider, built in 1901.

Seaside Kalakaua Boulevard is an ongoing carnival of 65,000 visitors a day gawking, shopping, or hurrying to luau shows. The International Marketplace provides open-air shopping for a staggering array of handicrafts and souvenirs. Nearby King's Village does the same with a Victorian flair, its architecture and nightly Changing-Of-The-Guard ceremony re-creating the style of Hawaii's last king, Kalakaua. Kapiolani Park, at the Diamond-Head end, includes the Waikiki Aquarium and the Honolulu Zoo.
