Rating
and General Location
This four (4) Hibiscus Rated property is situated on an
ideal section of sand located in the heart of Waikiki Beach
action. Originally constructed in 1901, the Moana Surfrider
was the first Waikiki Beachfront property. Catering to the
rich and famous of its day, the original building has been
painstakingly restored to its original beauty.
Physical Description
and Management
The property consists of three (3) buildings. The
original four (4) story Italian Renaissance building known
as the Banyan Wing and two (2) newer buildings of eight (8)
and twenty-one (21) stories known as the Diamond and Tower
Wings. The Sheraton Moana Surfrider is managed as part of
the Sheraton Luxury Collection.
Guest Orientation,
Common Areas and Room Locations
This property is designed for couples and families
seeking a level of luxury, the charm of a bygone era and the
bustle of a beachfront resort. The property contains 793
rooms, three (3) restaurants, 24 hour room service, one (1)
moderate size pool, five (5) meeting rooms for up to 300,
and outdoor reception areas. Excellent views available from
rooms in both the original, as well as, the newer
buildings.
On
Our Last Visit
We particularly enjoy the charm and decor of rooms in
the original building, even though they may be slightly
smaller in size than rooms in the newer towers. Each time we
visit this property, we continue to be impressed by its old
world architectural beauty. The hotel entrance offers a
large veranda with rocking chairs for the enjoyment of
guests. This is a nice touch even if you are looking out
onto busy Kalakaua Avenue. On nearly every visit we have
observed white stretch limousines crowding the front drive
with wedding parties in process. The property reopened in
1989 after an extensive renovation. The rear courtyard
facing the beach is home to the famous Banyan tree which
rumor has was a favorite resting-place for Robert Louis
Stevenson. Least expensive of the Banyan Wing rooms overlook
the property entrance and Waikiki traffic. More desirable
rooms face the ocean and the Banyan Courtyard. Rooms in the
newer wings are generally larger and enjoy a more expansive
view due to their elevation. You are more likely to have a
lanai for outdoor enjoyment in one of the high rise towers.
Limited availability of lanais in the original wing.
